Hello noodlepies!
We’ve been exploring Esperance! One of the hardest things we have to do is decide on what to do and we constantly have FOMO. There is SO MUCH in every area we go to, and only so much time. So even though we are probably the most flexible of travellers we still have to prioritise what we think were going to enjoy the most and hope we don’t miss out on anything too fab.
Jon spent some time fishing in Brandy creek, and despite many locals promising there were lots of black bream not a fish was caught. We will keep trying! I don’t think Jon will actually go home unless he catches at least one fish. I spent some time relaxing in a hammock nearby reading my kindle.
We made sure to get a photo of the giant whale tail monument on the waterfront, and did some (but not all) of the Great Ocean Drive. The Jetty headlands were gorgeous along with the Southern Ports. We drove up to the Rotary Lookout and did the walk around getting some great views. All the best views have been in the middle of a little hike, involving stairs and a bit of rock navigating. Even though my fitness levels have dramatically decreased from where I used to be, we both agree it feels great to move our bodies more.
We drove as far as Salmon Beach, getting out and taking pictures and sometimes sand from Lovers Cove, West Beach and Blue Haven. The beaches here are absolutely stunning, and because we’ve had clear blue skies the water has been showing off quite a bit. Not complaining though! Forever grateful! The Esperance town also had a little market on for us to wander about with all the money supporting the local RFDS members.
We had initially booked a 4WD tour which would take us and drive us over 50km on the beach, stopping at Lucky Bay and seeing the local Kangaroos. Unfortunately the tour guide messaged us and let us know that due to the swell and tide levels it was going to be unsafe for us to actually drive on the sand. Considering that the beach drive was one of the more enticing parts of the tour we decided to cancel and drive out there by ourselves. So we got up early and drove out through Cape Le Grand National Park and walked along Lucky Bay (You better believe I got some sand from here too 😉 ). Lucky Bay really is as beautiful as you can imagine. Or google. Pure white sand, blue ocean but no kangaroos 😦 . Maybe next time!
On the way home we dropped in on Whistling Rock and on Esperance Stonehenge – An exact replica of what the Scotland Stonehenge would have looked like in her prime days. It’s made of Esperance Granite and is aligned with the Solstices just like Scotland’s Stonehenge was originally built.
As usual there’s never enough time in one location, but we’re eager to attack the Nullarbor!
